Moissanite or CZ? A Technical Guide to Spotting the Difference in Iced-Out Jewelry

The hip hop jewelry market is flooded with fakes. Not just "fake" in the sense of being counterfeit brands, but fake in the literal composition of the stones. A dealer will sell you a "Moissanite" piece for $2,000, but the stones in it cost fifty cents each. They are Cubic Zirconia (CZ)—the lab-grown imposter that has fooled thousands of buyers.
For the uninitiated, telling them apart is nearly impossible. Both are colorless, both are sparkly, and both look "diamond-like" under store lights. But under the scrutiny of a trained eye and the laws of physics, the differences are stark. At GLEEI, we believe an educated buyer is our best customer. Here is the technical guide to moissanite vs cz test.
The Double Refraction Test (The "Newspaper" Trick)
This is the gold standard for identification. Moissanite is doubly refractive, meaning light splits into two rays as it passes through the stone. CZ is singly refractive, like a diamond.
The Test: Place the stone over a newspaper or a printed page. Look through the top of the stone (the table facet) down to the text.
CZ/Diamond: You will see a single, clear image of the text (if the cut is shallow) or a distorted, single image.
Moissanite: You will see a double image. The letters will look blurry or doubled. This is the most definitive proof.
The Caveat: This test is harder to perform on very small stones (under 2mm), but it is foolproof on the larger center stones of a moissanite hip hop pendant.
The Thermal Conductivity Test (The Pen Trick)
Jewelers use electronic testers, but you can do a version of this at home.
The Breath Test: Fog the stone with your breath, just like you're cleaning glasses.
Diamond/Moissanite: These disperse heat instantly. The fog should vanish in 1 second.
CZ: CZ retains heat. The fog will linger for 3-4 seconds.
The Reason: Moissanite is a great conductor of heat (second only to diamond). CZ is a thermal insulator. It holds onto the warmth of your breath.
The Weight Test: Specific Gravity
Pick up a 10mm round stone.
Moissanite: Will feel surprisingly light.
CZ: Will feel noticeably heavier.
The Science: CZ is about 1.7 times denser than Moissanite. If you have two identical-sized stones, the CZ will be significantly heavier. This is why a moissanite bracelet often feels lighter than a CZ bracelet of the same size.
The "Rainbow" Fire Test
Hold the stone under a direct light source (like a flashlight or the sun).
CZ: Throws off a white, silvery sparkle. It looks like glass. It might have a little color, but it's mostly white light.
Moissanite: Explodes with rainbow colors (red, green, blue). It has "fire." Sometimes, under certain lights, it can look a bit "disco ball" or even slightly oily. This is normal and desirable. If your stone only reflects white light, it's probably CZ.
The Price Benchmark: If It's Too Good to Be True...
This is the easiest test.
The Scam: A fully iced-out Cuban link with 500 stones for $300.
The Reality: High-quality D-Color VVS Moissanite costs money. The labor to hand-set 500 stones costs money. The S925 Sterling Silver costs money. If the price seems impossibly low for the size and ice, you are looking at CZ.
Don't let a smooth-talking salesman convince you that "CZ is just as good." It's not. CZ scratches easily, clouds over time, and has zero resale value. Moissanite is harder, brighter, and built to last.
We guarantee every stone in our moissanite hip hop pendant collection is genuine, lab-grown silicon carbide. We stand by our D color VVS moissanite because we know the difference. And if you're worried about the metal it's set in, remember our promise: S925 Sterling Silver only. No brass, no nickel, no excuses.
